In all things moderation By: Mark Morgan on 9/19/2000; 12:38 AM Any public discussion area will run into the question of what's appropriate and what's not appropriate, and what to do about it. There's an interesting discussion over at Metafilter about it. Right now it looks like Matt Haughey just deletes anything inappropriate. I haven't seen that happen much. One time it inadvertantly involved me--a man posted a link to his own website (bad) which was a long flame of his ex-wife (worse) that helpfully included her e-mail address such that you could discuss the whole thing with her (aargh!). In the, um, spirited discussion that followed (Matt Haughey's phrase) the man in question bullied members of his private mailing list into leaping into the thread and defending him from the ire of the Metafilterers. And my involvement? At some point someone associated with the private mailing list decided I was a reasonable voice and they e-mailed me to ask me to start a new thread on the subject, as theirs had been deleted and Matt had removed their account. I just forwarded the thing to Matt, who told them to go away. That whole thing was plain weird, like when someone signed up under the name and e-mail adress of someone else and flamed everything. Getting that mail that day, I felt like I was talking to those people who wear tin foil hats to keep the feds from controlling you with your mind rays. Note that I'm not naming names here. Let me tell you now, my plan is to move inappropriate posts to another board on this site. Under my hosting agreement I get several "conversations", and each conversation (among many other things) has its own discussion area. When the time comes the new board (which can go live whenever) will gain flames and trolls by the virtues of cut and paste. A request to be able to just move things is on record, twice, but a little cut and paste never hurt anyone. If this idea horribly offends anyone, now is the time. Your opinion will be duly noted.
