Shall we silence them who sing?
“The greatest signs of love…”
“… Are sacrifice and suffering.”
Let us beat upon their simple brows
And not let off till they be smashed
Or question what for they suffer now
For ‘tis love, or ‘tis for lust unhatched

Or

Shall we line them against the firing wall
While they sing their optimistic drill
Grey and stone; stained with musket balls
And await the captain’s fatal shrill
“Aim directly for their eyes…”
He might say on that cold foggy hill
“… It is them; us wise we must despise.”

Or

Shall we leave them be…
To sing and preach their fallacy
To wander past our foggy hill
And carry with them their hearts so weak
Always whining at motionless mill
Always questioning their own misery
Until we silence them and they be free

For who I loathe most are those who simplify
Love and all complicated things in life
To words and definitions and single lines
For love is not so simple to happen upon
It is not a rose dancing in the shower storm
Nor merely a knife in fist of a lover-scorned
It cannot be drawn or seen or worn
Or stated in this hasty prose of lacking form
