Maude Goth

Maude Goth
By: Chris Link on 10/4/2002; 7:18 PM

Dead rose approaches, cresting the middle horizon,
like raven, like harrier ascending,

An apparition not flying, but gliding the stone commons,
        under gargoyle and lantern tower.

Black mane wafts apart to disclose her powdery aspect, an organic study in light contrast,

pale flesh behind malignant mouth, her eyes disappearing; even Ansel would lose her shadow.

Such bold and manifest evil begs an Inquisitor's wrath, mystic maiden's destined end desiring,

yet no crowd or judge appears save a shy spector passing by, who nods once but brooks no attachment.

Peonies and the sky blue sky mock the parody. Pierced flesh slouches to the library.

This is an awesome piece, Mr. Link. I love the way you described your gothic subject. Were you just sitting somewhere observing her?

Hey, I definitely like this Chris. You have done an excellent job, I think, of capturing the Goth ambience in this poem. And like Rachelle, I like the way you've described her.

Thanks Rachelle and Benn. This piece is based on one of those odd occurances that I collect in my mind. I have to travel quite a distance to access a good university library, usually during holidays or the summer when there aren't very many students around. I was the shy one leaving the library one day when I saw a girl approaching who was obviously into the gothic lifestyle. I was amused because we were in the middle of buildings with "university gothic" architecture. It occurred to me that such obvious dress would have put her into the fire if we were actually living in the gothic era.

Also, the title is a play on the name Maude Gonne, the Irish nationalist who was inspiration to Yeats.

(You know, I should really start reading more...) It's a very interesting experience and observation.
