The Chair Yields to the Senator From Disney By: ScottN on 3/21/2002; 8:17 PM Well, it happened. Senator Fritz Hollings <STRIKE>(D-Disney)</STRIKE>(D-SC) has introduced the SSSCA. OK, he renamed it to make it more warm and fuzzy. After all,"Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act" doesn't sound like it's screwing over the public, unlike "Security Systems Standards and Certification Act". The bill's text is not available online yet, as far as I can tell, but Thomas should have it soon. You remember that fad "All your base are belong to us"? Well, this act is the MPAA's and RIAA's way of saying "All your tape (and computer) are belong to us!" Do a web search on SSSCA. Find out about it. Then, if you live in the US, WRITE YOUR CONGRESSMAN AND SENATORS!!!! Today! If you don't live in the US, then write your MP or whatever your elected representative is called, and tell them that you don't want anything resembling this abomination to even be thought about in your country. Canadians, you have extra incentives... the cost of your media is going to go through the roof if you do nothing.
RE: The Chair Yields to the Senator From Disney By: Chie Theresa Fujioka on 3/22/2002; 8:28 AM this is totalitarian. i don't see copy machines designed to prevent people from copying a book. next thing you know, it'll be the boston tea party all over again. and with a little more 21st century...

You might. Photocopiers clearly fit within the framework of the SSCA. So do printers.

RE: The Chair Yields to the Senator From Disney By: ScottN on 3/27/2002; 1:28 PM I've started. I wrote to Bush and asked him to actively oppose it, and to veto it should it come to his desk. I know that many people here don't like Bush (I'm ambivalent, personally), but he could be a valuable ally in this. Remember, he doesn't like the "liberal Hollywood Elite", or "government intrusion in business", and flat out said during the campaign "I prefer innovation to litigation". Also, I pointed out that Hollywood is being hypocritical here... whenever the gov't tried to regulate what *they* say, they drape themselves (quite rightly) in the First Amendment. Why then are they pushing to regulate what others say or do? Next up is my Congressman (Brad Sherman (D-Woodland Hills)), and my Senators (Boxer and Feinstein), though Feinstein is a lost cause.
RE: The Chair Yields to the Senator From Disney By: ScottN on 3/28/2002; 4:18 PM The Representative from Disney, Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) is looking to introduce the CBDTPA in the House. As a side note, Schiff really *IS* the Representative from Disney -- their HQ is in Burbank.
Re: The Chair Yields to the Senator From Disney By: Matthew Patterson on 3/28/2002; 7:51 PM Chant it with me, now: Die in committee! Failing that, we could always hope that it doesn't get passed before the current Congress ends. And that its sponsors lose re-election, assuming they're up for it. (I don't know if Sen. Hollings is or not.) Not bloody likely, of course.
RE: The Chair Yields to the Senator From Disney By: ScottN on 3/29/2002; 12:41 AM That didn't work for the DMCA. Anyone want to organize the "Million Geek March"?

A spokesman for Dick Armey blasted Schiff today over the House version, so maybe the Republicans might try the "no gov't interference" line. It's not like they were big fans of Hollywood to begin with.
RE: The Chair Yields to the Senator From Disney By: ScottN on 4/6/2002; 11:43 PM Well, it looks like Leahy has killed the CBDTPA in committee, at least for this session. Here's something else you might want to see (scroll about halfway down, and search for "Neugroschl").
