Americans Are Peculiar By: Aradia on 3/20/2002; 12:52 AM What is with American society today? There's an obvious desire to maintain purity in the youth; so obvious, in fact, it practically forms the atmosphere of Earth. But there's more than that. And more to it. The other day, I was working on a science project with a student I mentor. She's 13 years old, and in 7th grade. And she wanted ideas on how to illustrate why the sky is blue. In between brainstorming ideas, I mentioned 2 homes and 1 condo to her. And somehow, my best friend's boyfriend picked up the idea I was promoting premarital sex. All I could say was, "What?!" While I wasn't promoting premarital sex (and in his case, I'd probably discourage it), I'm not against it. But I also believe that if a child wants answers to some questions, it doesn't help to say, "You're too young." So they're too young at 13. And 14. And 15. By the time 16 rolls around, they're doing it. They weren't taught otherwise. They were taught that they're too stupid to know the facts. And so they're rebelling. Besides...look at Hollywood. Practically every movie has some sexual scene in it, or at the very least, sexual overtones. It's everywhere. Anyway, getting back to "Missy" and "David" and the others. So David thinks I'm promoting premarital sex to Missy. And "Cris" tells me this on the phone. The first thing that I think of isn't that David has gone insane. That's the second thing. The first thing I think of is, So what? At least Missy knows she can come to me if she does have questions. And I'll answer to the best of my ability. And the third thing I think of, Why would I be promoting premarital sex to a 13 year old? I'd really rather Missy waited until she was 18. So that she's legally capable of handling herself if she chooses to engage in premarital sex. And if she gets pregnant. But hey, that's just me. So why do American adults have this obsession that sex is dirty and bad and to be discouraged? Who knows? All I can say in response is one thing. "It's better to be informed than ignorant."
