Carrier Pigeons and IM By: ScottN on 1/31/2002; 1:32 AM My curmudgeonly rant about IM made reference to Carrier Pigeons... This reminded me of something. It's old news, but it's offbeat enough to reference here. Internet protocols are defined by something called Requests for Comments (RFCs). Most are serious, but there's a tradition of making silly RFCs for April 1st. In particular, RFC1149 defines "A Standard for the Transmission of IP Datagrams on Avian Carriers", or the Carrier Pigeon Internet Protocol (CPIP), for short. In any case, about a year ago, some really crazy people in Bergen, Norway, decided to implement this protocol -- it actually worked! So yes, computer data can, and has been sent by carrier pigeon!
