An Announcement for 2014 By: Brian Webber on 1/16/2002; 4:25 PM UPDATE: Although I will be old enough to run for any Senate seat in 2012, the next Colorado Senate run won't be. It'll actually be in 2014. I have changed this to reflect that. I, Brian D Webber am announcing my candidacy for the Senate, representing the great state of Colorado, in 2014. I figure if it's OK for Presdient's to start running for re-election before the inaguration is even over... So in about 12 years you'll have to call me Senator Webber. Yes you. Becuase I don't intend to abandon VoU anytime soon. Anyway, here's some pieces of the platform I intend to run on. Gays in the Military Like John McCain says, you don't need to be straight, you just need to SHOOT straight. The Space Program I like the space program, but with the economy as bad as it is, we may need to put it on hiatus for a few years. Drug laws I'm all for marijuana legalization. At a fair in Boulder once I bought a shirt made out of hemp, and it was quite comfy (no, no contact high). In fact there were patches, and paper, and all sorts of things! But most importantly paper! Hemp is far easier to grow and replace after harvest than Rainforests. Hemp has practical uses, and we as Americans have been denied these things by self-righteous politicians, under the guise of morality. Well how moral is it to denounce a helpful item just becuase some people like to smoke it? In fact, why do they hate Pot so much anyway? Tobacco related deaths last year? Thousands. Marijuana related deaths? 0. When the last time you heard of someone dying of marijuana poisoning? Unless it's spiked with something else (the way cigs are BTW), the only negative side-effects are lack of motivation, and the desire to eat junk food in bulk. The Religous Right screams about Driving high is worse than driving drunk. Well I would agree, but honestly, when do pot-heads get the motivation to even find the keys let alone find the car? I've heard, in my 20 years on this planet, maybe ONE instance where was cuahgt driving high, but countless incidents of people driving drunk. Marijuana isn't the gateway drug, beer is. The Death Penalty: I ask that "Life without Parole plus Restitution" be implemented. Currently, it costs considerably less to house an inmate for life than to pay the additional costs for a capital case, appeals, separate jail facilities, etc. With the LWOP+R system, the inmate can never be paroled and they will spend the rest of their days working and having to live in general jail population (and living with the extra hazards that entails). Assuming the inmate is capable of doing some kind of profitable work, some of the money can go towards the prison (e.g. less tax payer money needed) and some of the money can go to victims' charities (hence the victims aren't forgotten by any means). Not only does this save money, but it also accomplishes the goals of incarceration, restitution, and retribution. This has not been proven to be a deterrent, but neither has capital punishment. If it comes to light that a criminal is innocent, they will still be alive and able to reclaim their freedom. This system allows the government to permanently separate the worst criminals from society and punish them without stooping to the same level by committing murder. In case you are thinking it is illegal to force prisoners to work, I assure you it is not. I quote the U.S. Constitution: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States" I ask for a moratorium on death penalty for a trial period (5 years minimum recommended) in which the new LWOP+R system can be implemented and tested. School Prayer: Take prayer out of school. With prayer in schools, it allows the school officials to dictate how students should pray. What about the students who attend that particular school and do not hold the same Christian beliefs? They could be Muslim, Hindu, Athesit, Buddhist, etc. Take prayer out of schools and make it a thing that should be done at home. School is a place to learn, not pray. If you want your children to pray, send them to a parochial school, but do not pollute our current education system with segregated beliefs that everyone does not share. Or even better, pray with your children, at home. Gay Rights: In the US, we are constantly being reminded not to discriminate against people because of their race, their gender, or their sexual orientation, yet we don't allow people to get married simply because they are of the same sex. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this not a form or discrimination? It should be brought to a halt immediately, and people should be allowed the right to marry whom they choose. And with the marriage penalty tax, why would money-grubbing politicians pass up this opportunity to furhter stuff the government's pockets? Race Relations: Can we please stop calling discrimination against white people Reverse Discrimination please? Grammatically it makes no sense. Discrimination is discrimination is discrimination. Plain and simple. And certainly abuse of affirmative action has to stop. An unqualified minority who demands a job he isn't qualified for with threats of a discrimination suit should be charged with extortion. And I certainly hope that the NAACP and the Rainbow Coalition will support me in this. Oh, I forgot the biggie. I will be running as a member of the Natural Law Party.

RE: An Announcement for 2012 By: Mark Morgan on 1/5/2002; 1:56 PM Brian, FYI I'm going to move both the journals (and any future ones) into a separate space, so that content and discussions of them don't get mixed in with the written works. This won't happen in the immediate future because it's a major project, but that's the plan.

RE: An Announcement for 2012 By: Evan on 1/6/2002; 9:28 PM I'd vote for you, except that I probably won't be living in Colorado in 2012 but you never know.
