Are they kidding me? By: Mark Morgan on 7/1/2001; 4:36 PM Salon is just now getting around to the gay Star Trek story? Somebody push Salon over, they're dead and haven't noticed it yet. Good grief. Next up: Salon reports on that newfangled thing, "color" television. One of the things about the web is I don't have to rely on my local newspaper to dredge up old stories to fill space. And I don't have to go to Salon to read them, either. So, piss off, Salon. I'm going to go read some good Writings instead.
RE: Are they kidding me? By: Katy Kat on 7/1/2001; 8:31 PM Hmm... gay Star Trek, now THAT might be interesting. While definitely not gay myself (ahh, the delightfully delicious male), it would certainly be interesting to see what they could come up with. My first suggestion would be pure ratings from male fans. Two Klingon chicks biting each other and stuff, yeah. Second suggestion would be to keep the Farangies out of the gay scene. Im sorry Quark but some other ugly squashed dude rubbin your ears wouldnt do much for the female fans. Maybe in the next next next Star Trek, they could resurrect Dax and she and Seven could have an affair! Some ratings there. Thank you Mark, for saying that I was posting something reasonable. I didnt get to read it since it said some such error, but I caught the first part under the title. All to often I rise to someones goading, and since I type really fast I forget that Im writing too much to read. Though after that one, I decided to try to not write so much, since I dont want to bore my computer to death.
RE: Are they kidding me? By: Evan on 7/1/2001; 8:49 PM That's unbelievable. I heard about it a long time ago and I live in almost complete ignorance of what goes on in the outside world. Of course on the other hand I am something of a science fiction afficionado in general and Star Trek specifically so that sort of thing is more likely to penetrate my happy bubble of ignorance. Incidentally there was an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation which dealt with homosexuality to a degree which was quite a long time ago. The episode was called The Outcast. Of course they didn't confront the issue openly but through an alien species which had a different view of the what was normal (a completely arbitrary and useless concept) and what was abnormal (what everybody actually is).

David Talbot's been running around lately saying that as Salon goes, so goes democracy in the United States. All those damn corporate media giants won't give us what the people need to read! After all Time rarely covers the sexual politics of fan fiction, and when was the last time you heard Tom Brokaw wax philosophically about the Gor novels? Damn those corporate shills! How the Republic will continue to stand without Talbot's online version of a supermarket tabloid/soft is certainly a puzzle for the ages. The funny thing is that even with all the millions Talbot's spent, Salon is usually only marginally superior to the better of the weblogs out there (the best thing that ever happened to Salon, in fact, is that everybody compares it to Slate which somehow manages to be even worse -- the average free newspaper is better than that crap).
Re: Are they kidding me? By: Mark Morgan on 7/4/2001; 12:58 PM I didnt get to read it since it said some such error... Ugh, I know. It should all be working now, Katy. This is caused whenever anyone deletes a post. I've abused Conversant, the system that runs this website, so it clogs up everything when a message is deleted. I'll probably have to eliminate the delete button until I can figure out what to do. Don't panic! You can always "delete" a message by editing it and replacing it with nothing. Or a :-( or whatever....
Re: Are they kidding me? By: Mark Morgan on 7/4/2001; 1:03 PM David Talbot's been running around lately saying that as Salon goes, so goes democracy in the United States. Right on. What strikes me as most absurd is that the "gay Trek" feature is about as relevant and cutting edge a story as the "first interracial kiss" feature. It's dead news. One would've thought they would have waited until the new series was out to give this dog of a story some legs or relevance or something. Gor. Wow. Salon really isn't worth the paper it's printed on, is it?
