Distributed computing constructs
By: Mark Morgan on 4/5/2001; 3:13 PM

It's a funny old universe.

Yes, I'm still living, breathing, and typing. At this moment Elroy the iMac is a $1200 doorstop. Not only am I not connected to the 'net (it's an ordeal, and I'm about to just yield and pay the damn $20 for standard dialup), but the printer is not communicating with Elroy any more and I don't have the proper driver to re-install. Which is available. By download.

Sigh.

But enough of my whining! I'm at the First Advisor's, hogging her husband's way-fast DSL connection attached to his way-fast 1ghz (yes, I meant to put a "g" in there) computer, looking at a monitor bigger than my fishtank, I swear to god. I've been living here in Portland and utterly enjoying my time offline, visiting the world and working like a dog (85 hours one two-week period). I love my life.

An Internet publisher without access to the Internet is a strange phenomenon, because VoU is still here, waiting patiently for my sorry backside to return and do some darn work. Which I will try to get as much done as possible right this second. My apologies to all for the delay in publishing your pieces, and thank you for your patience over the past couple of weeks.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have minions who need some, um, persuasion...

[B]ut the printer is not communicating with Elroy any more and I don't have the proper driver to re-install. Which is available. By download.
And which didn't solve the problem, darnit. Looks like I'm off to Fry's for a printer cable.

And I discovered if I had $195 for a modem I could have shared DSL service with Becca the roommate. So I don't eat for a month...

But the real purpose of this message is to let everyone know that I'm back online, and I'll be checking in regularly to publish and manage and all those wonderful things. While I was offline Macrobyte Resources, the creators of Conversant, had a huge couple of weeks rolling out "conditional macros" which allows some extremely slick effects; and XML-RPC support, about which having spelled correctly I've shared all I know.

Ja love, mon.

Neither the driver, nor a new Belkin USB cable solved the problem. Additional attempts to reinstall the driver just made the chooser complete fail to notice the printer--it won't give me a USB port to choose!

Grr...

I admit to being stumped. And unable to print.
