Humor By: Sam Marston on 10/22/2001; 8:26 PM Humor originates in error. Whether finding it in the quality of airline food, or the fact that some professionals believe that talking on the phone whilst driving is productive humor, we laugh at our faultas and the faults of others. When one recalls a stand-up comedian, one recalls spiels of Loraina Bobbit and her husbands genitalia, or O.J. Simpsons joyride in a white Ford Bronco. What could be funnier, than what we screw up? In 1997 a terrorist mailed a letter bomb. This man careful and long hours building a bomb to wipe out his most assuredly hated enemy, with one error. He forgot to attach the correct postage. The post office sent the deadly package marked Return to Sender back to the would-be terrorist. In a fit of glee (perhaps he thought he was receiving cookies from mom) the man opened the package, and blew himself to bits. This really happened. In 1992 A North Carolina man, blew himself away. He head the sound of the phone near his bed ringing, awaking this unfortunate fellow reached for the phone. Instead he picked up a Smith & Wesson .38 Special, which discharged when he drew it to his ear. This to, really happened. An English fellow of 17 decided that he didnt smell too sweet, and began to obsess. He doused his body in 7 types of deodorant, and bathed four times a day. His parents asked him if he was going too far, however he said he just wanted to smell good. Six months later he died. This poor soul had 10 times the lethal dose of deodorant running through his system, and perished from a cardiac arrest. Again, this really happened. Six people drowned in Egypt while trying to rescue a chicken that had fallen into a well in. A young farmer descended first into the 60-foot well. He drowned. His sister and two brothers, none of whom could swim well, went in one by one to help him. They also drowned. Two elderly farmers then came to help, but the vicious well claimed their lives as well. When the bodies were pulled out, there was only one survivor, the Chicken. This really happened. Seven firefighters from a Volunteer Fire Department, Tennessee , decided to impress their Chief by setting fire to a house, then heroically extinguishing the blaze. The men apparently hatched the plan in order to help a former firefighter, return to duty. Sadly, this mans career plans were irreversibly snuffed when he became trapped while dousing the house in gasoline. Surrounded by smoke and flames, he was unable to escape, and died inside the burning house. The others are serving 87 year sentences for arson, burglary, and conspiracy. This happened. Five instances, all ending in human death, all unmistakably hilarious. Human error is what grabs you, makes you look at yourself and the people around us, and laugh. I think the old saying had it best To error is human, and humans are pretty funny.
