Vacation Thoughts (third in a series) By: Mark Morgan on 11/28/2000; 4:46 PM <<PREV Friday, November 10th (continued): If anyone's to blame for me coming to Arizona, let's blame Erika. I told people: "After Enola left, I was ready to just get in my car and drive away and never come back." Rick Wise, who I babysit for, suggested a vacation instead. That night I mentioned same to Aradia. "Erika wants you to come with us on our Veteran's Day vacation." Okay. A bunch of money and several changes of schedule, and I'm in the desert. Happy. I didn't think I'd ever come back to the desert, and certainly not be happy about it. When I was married, the last year we were together we lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico. No money and no communication and no compatibility and I doubt I'll ever return to Albuquerque for any reason. Unless it involves money. A lot of money. But I'm back in the desert, and I'm happy, and let's blame Erika for that, too, while we're at it. I finally get to meet Erika and Kevin. I try to look menacing yet friendly, that I will be a distraction and yet make a good first impression. Commando raids take precision acting, you know. I see Erika for maybe ten seconds ("Hi, I'm Mark, glad to meet you.") Then the two women vanish into the bedroom. Leaving me to talk to Kevin. I say, "Nope. Don't understand women at all," say I. They return, presumably having passed the bag without being caught by the authorities. MJ scoots me out of the house. "So, do you want to see my apartment tonight, or would you like to wait until tomorrow?" I'm not tired. Or bored. Why not tonight? It's a nice place. I meet the computer that's been the other end of my conversations with MJ for the past year. I meet the posters on her wall, one of which--way cool!--looks like an old wizard from one angle, and a young one from another. There's a lesson in there, I'm sure. I'm very happy. Much later, in my hotel room, I catch up on two months of insomnia and sleep like a brick, the television blaring unwatched. <<PREV
