Dark Hunter

By Aradia

She ran in terror, her feet slipping constantly on the slick ground. The rain pounded around her, thunder echoing in the distance. But she ran on, hearing heavy breathing behind her, a sure sign of her pursuer.

The magic was swelling within her, threatening to burst free. She held it in check, knowing the destruction she was capable of creating. Knowing that if she allowed herself to lose control, she would loose fire upon the sacred ground.

That was what had started it all. Her belief that the ground she trod on was sacred. Her silent rejection of the values that the patriarchal society demanded. Her outright rejection of the deity pressed upon her by her father’s lord.

Her foot slipped again, and she crashed to the ground, scrambling to rise and escape.

Her escape was not to be.

As the darkened figure fell on top of her, she started to scream. An icy knife was pressed to her throat, and she swallowed her scream.

Her mind screamed at her to let her magic free, to destroy the Dark Hunter.

Her heart screamed at her to protect the sacred shrine of the Shining One.

Her hesitation destroyed her.

The Dark Hunter slid his knife over her throat.

And the Shining One wept.
