Simple Complexity of Human Nature

By Beverly

The batteries died in my TV remote today. I learned this as I sat on my bed with my shoes half tied and dangling off of my feet. I tried to switch the channels, but to no avail. The weather channel is only appealing for so long, mind you. Long I sat pressing the buttons as hard as I could just trying to squeeze any last, forgotten juices out of the batteries just to change one measly channel. No deal. The weather channel won the battle, but not the war. Realizing that the TV was only about 2 feet in front of me, I leaned to the right and clicked the button to change the channel, one channel down. Human nature had wrestled with my being as I fought with that remote, but common nature prevailed as I pressed that button and saw the scarce, yet vibrant music videos of MTV gurus on my screen. I was pleased.

As I pulled my shoes onto my feet and finished tying them, I gathered my things and placed them all in my bag, ready to face the world. Then I promptly leaned over once more and pressed the power button, watching as the TV gurus flash into non-existence. Again, I was pleased. I had defeated the human nature in me, but again, I had proven it to be correct. As I pressed the button to turn it off, I had fulfilled my need to conquer. Once I had, the battle that I had won against the TV remote became insignificant.

Human nature makes us do some strange things, like fighting with TV remotes for a moment of glory against an inanimate object. Humans are, indeed, works in progress, and perhaps some are in need of a little more work than others. Definitely not to belittle anyone reading this now, but truly, do you agree or disagree? OK, so maybe you’ve never fought with an inanimate object or anything of that sort, but I am a firm believer that everyone has a need to conquer at least one thing in life, no matter how large or small that one thing may be. Thus, it is human nature. Perhaps this is trite, and maybe you don’t believe that my batteries died today as I sat on my bed tying my shoes, but it’s true. And so is my human nature theory. I’ve seen too many things and too many inanimate object battles being won and lost by humans not to believe.
