Earlier this wee hour, I composed a more in depth(no pun intended)version of this essay, but it got erased when I tried to post it.
The Marianas Trench, near the Island of Guam is the Deepest part of the Pacific Ocean-literally the deepest water in the World-at over 35'000' deep. That's equal to the height of a cruising commercial jet. if you were swimming there, the only thing between you & the greatest crushing ocean depths is your own bouyancy.
If you were in Guam, & went on a boat cruise to this region, & you had an opportunity to swim in the ocean there in exchange for an "I SURVIVED SWIMMING IN THE WORLD'S DEEPEST WATER" T-shirt, would jumping into water that deep frighten you, assuming no other hazards? Or would you assume that once water's over your head it doesn't make much difference as it's the same water at the surface? That it's the water above-not below-that can harm you?
Speaking for myself, being the glutton for cheap glory that I am, I probably would havegone by that assumption & swam in it to say I've done it, though the existance of enough water below me to cover Mt. Everest w/ a mile to spare may be a little haunting. I can't say for sure as I've never had that opportunuty, but I've jumped into 3500' of air(skydiving), which is more dangerous & far more scary. Deep water is nothing compared to deep air! LOL I suppose most people would have done the same thing.Jumped into the water I mean-not the air.
