Doubleplusungood

This isn't going to be what you think.

Does anyone remember the organization in 1984 known as the Junior Anti-Sex League? The organization (I think Julia did some work with it as cover) dedicated to, apparently, stopping people from having sex other than to have children, to "do their duty to the Party," as Winston's wife put it? Along this line, Winston's torturer (and I am *totally* blanking on the man's name) mentions, at some point, the government's systematic eradication of every possible way a person could have any individual feeling. He says as part of this that their neuroscientists are working to "eliminate the orgasm."

Why am I mentioning this? Well, there's an organization at my school that goes by the name of the GPA Club. No, this does not stand for grade-point average. This is the Governor's Program on Abstinence, a government-sponsored program whose goal is to promote abstinence-only education in all schools in the state. Tuesday, during our regular weekly announcements, a club representative said that the 2002 Abstinence Rally at the state capital will occur sometime later this month (I honestly forget when), and that everyone who wants to should come, and there would be speakers, and blah blah. At this point, it occurred to me.

Junior Anti-Sex League = Governor's Program on Abstinence.

Of all the ways 1984's influence can be seen in our lives, this is decidedly the most bizarre example I've seen.

So anyway, I thought it was an interesting literary parallel. Perhaps someone else who's aware of this organization could check my reasoning, see if it's valid? And maybe write something longer about it? Might make an interesting essay on parallels between literature and real life, but I'm much too tired to write it at the moment.

(PS: Tried sending this via email first, it got bounced. May I then presume that the threading bug is currently being worked on?)
