New Reading Tracking Tool
By: Sean McMains on 1/17/2006; 10:52 PM

Hi Folks,

Mark has generously given me permission to post a link here to my latest project, which may be of especial interest to this particular crew. It's Bibliofile, a free online reading logging tool. From the welcome page:

Bibliofile is a tool for keeping track of books: those you've read, those you'd like to read, and those you're reading. You can use it to:
  • Put a "What I'm Reading" list on your web page or blog. (All the cool kids are doing it!)
  • Compile statistics on what and how much you're reading. (What was the book you rated lowest last year? Something by William Shatner would be our guess.)
  • Consult your "books to read" list when you're at the library or book store. (Assuming they have wireless Internet or you're willing to drag a really long network cable behind you.)
  • Share your reading wishlist with your well-heeled friends and loved ones.

If you're interested, stop on by http://www.myreadinglog.net/ and try it out!

Thanks! Sean

That's awesome! It's a shame this site wasn't around when I was puting together the Book lists for my website.

Some advice though? Include a Not Sure option in case someone can't actually remember the exact date when they finsihed a book. Also, the ability to add more than one at a time would be helpful, espeically if you want to add a book series that isn't available as an omnibus edition, like say the 11 books in the Alex Cross series by James Patterson.

Hey Brian,

Thanks for the great feedback!

The "not sure" completion date sounds workable -- I'll add it to my to-do list. If one selected "not sure" for the completion date, how would you expect that to be handled on the statistics page when doing the tallies by year? Would "not sure" items be ignored? Would you like another line for "not sure" items?

You're the second person to ask for the "add multiple books" option. It's a little more work than the "not sure" suggestion, but your additional vote raises its priority -- I've rescheduled it for the next release now.

If anything more occurs to you, please let me know; I really appreciate the thoughtful input.

Sean

No problem. As for the how the thing should be tallied, I have absolutely no idea. *LOL* I'm not exactly an expert on web design.

Well, I must say Bibliophile really came in handy for me recently. I used it to provide an aid for readers of my MySpace blog, for the entry that has very logn title, but the words "book" "pile" and "plan" are in it. ;-)

Great to hear it, Brian!

How are you generating the long list, out of curiosity? Is that dumped from Delicious Library or something of the sort?

Generating the long...? Oh you mean where do I get all my books? *shrug* Everywhere that sells books. Book stores, Target, the supermarket sometimes, on-line retailers. I also get books as presents which I love.
